In 1961, a prison in Pinar del Río was converted into the Francisco Donatién tobacco factory, where many different cigars and cigarettes were made. Included in the production was a range of cigars designed purely for domestic use, offering more intense flavours than most of the cigars sold abroad. These local cigars became known as Vegueros.
For many decades, Vegueros could only be enjoyed by those lucky enough to visit Cuba. However, in 1996, the Vegueros brand was made available internationally, meaning more people can experience authentic Cuban tastes.
