The History of Cohiba Behike Cigars
Behike is the most exclusive line from the most exclusive of Cuban cigar brands.
Cohiba was created in 1966 following the Cuban Revolution, at the request of Fidel Castro himself. Designed to represent the very best in Cuba’s traditional cigar craft, the brand was given a custom-built factory, El Laguito, where masters could get to work. Cohiba cigars were originally only available to government officials, international diplomats and other high-ranking guests.
Cohiba became a commercial cigar brand in the 1980s, but its core ideals remain to this day. The cigars are still made in El Laguito in small batches using the best of the best tobaccos, limiting supply and increasing their allure.
The Behike line was first released in 2010. These large Cubans are extra premium even by Cohiba’s standards, and are arguably the most exclusive Cuban cigar outside of limited edition Cubans.
What sets the Behike apart is its fourth filler leaf, the medio tiempo. Incredibly delicate, this sun-kissed leaf grows on the top of tobacco plants and requires intense care to cultivate to a good enough quality for use in cigars.
