Cigar Review: La Galera Connecticut Chaveta Robusto Cigar

Share:

The La Galera brand has been around since 2016. It is rolled at Jochy Blanco’s Tabacalera Palma and launched with two blends, La Galera Connecticut and La Galera Habano. Prior to the La Galera brand, Tabacalera Palma had made cigars for many other companies but didn’t have a name for itself. That all changed with Jochy Blanco’s brand, La Galera. The name La Galera comes from the term for the roller’s room in the factory, a high point of activity.

The Beginning

Once the cigar is lit, there are traces of honey along with a delicate floral component. As we move into the first third of the cigar, some berry notes begin to emerge. The cigar is smooth and balanced while the retrohale has more honey bursts.

The Middle

Moving on to the middle of the cigar, honey notes remain dominant with some fruitiness and spice. There are some underlying notes of earth, cedar and hay, but the sweetness of the cigar really shines through.

The End

The end is so buttery smooth with continued notes of cedar. The honey that was dominant in the first two-thirds is more noticeable on the finish as the cigar comes to a close, while the retrohale of the cigar and aroma are really delicious.

Burn & Draw

The La Galera Connecticut Chaveta scored very nicely when it came to its burn. The Chaveta took a straight burn path from start to finish. As for the resulting ash, it was nearly white in colour. The burn rate and burn temperature were both ideal.

The draw to the La Galera Connecticut Chaveta is so on point. This cigar had just the right amount of resistance and didn’t require any maintenance.

Overall

The La Galera Connecticut has a profile that is distinct and feels like something new. The La Galera doesn’t have that been there done that feel to it and for me that has been the reason I smoke it time and time again.

Ross Rating: 10/10

What alcoholic drink would I pair the La Galera Connecticut Chaveta Robusto Cigar with?

The La Galera Connecticut Chaveta Robusto Cigar would pair fantastically with Brugal 1888 Double Aged Dominican Rum (70cl / 40%).

This special edition from Dominican producer Brugal has been double-distilled and matured in American oak before a second maturation period in sherry casks to add a dose of dried fruit and leathery sweetness to the flavours.

What soft drink would I pair the La Galera Connecticut Chaveta Robusto Cigar with?

Lilt, but the new Fanta version.

Would I smoke the La Galera Connecticut Chaveta Robusto Cigar again?

I think that the La Galera is one of the best examples of Connecticut offerings out there. This is a must-smoke cigar. It gives an entirely new outlook on what milder cigars can bring to the table.
